These buildings are located in the old city center. Plenary sessions will be held in room D018, while parallel sessions are held in room D018 and room C117. Lunches will be served in the university restaurant ``Atrium", adjacent to the Oudemanhuispoort. The location of the Oudemanhuispoort and Atrium within Amsterdam's city center is indicated on an enclosed leaflet. \subsection*{Maps} The EMG'93 information package contains two maps. There's a map enclosed that shows all public transport routes, and there's a leaflet, displaying the location of the Oudemanhuispoort buildings. \subsection*{The VU Hospitium \\ (Guesthouse of the Free University)} Most participants will be accommodated at the VU hospitium (address: Laan van Kronenburg 9). The VU Hospitium is located approx. 6 km's south of the city center and can easily be reached by tram or metro, line 5 or 51. On Monday evening June 5th, an informal get-together will be held in the VU- Hospitium. A convenient way to get there from the city center (e.g. central station) is as follows: {\em Use metro-stop ``Uilenstede" (metro 51-direction Amstelveen/ Middenhoven). From the stop: go East, using the footpath, walk over a bridge, keep a block of flats on your right hand side and walk till you reach the Hospitium at 9, Laan van Kronenburg.} For the convenience of EMG delegates some signposts will be placed between the tramstop and the Hospitium. \subsection*{Pre-registration} Registration for EMG'93 starts on Monday at the ``VU Hospitium", Laan van Kronenburg 9, Amstelveen. A registration desk will be open from 20.00 until 23.00. The bar in the VU Hospitium will be open from 20.00 till 24.00. During conference days, the registration desk will be open from 8.30 to 17.30 at the Oudemanhuispoort. \subsection*{Social Events} Social events start with the informal get-together on Monday, July 5th at the VU Guesthouse (``Hospitium") between 20.00 and 23.00. Directions how to get there: see above. The conference dinner will be held on Wednesday, July 7th. Delegates will be transported to the dinner site by canalboat, immediately after Tuesday's last session. \subsection*{Money} The national currency unit is the Dutch guilder (Dutch: gulden), abbreviated: HFL, DFL or NLG. Coins are circulating in units of 0.05, 0.10, 0.25, 1.00, 2.50 and 5.00, Banknotes in units of 10.00, 25.00, 50.00, 100.00, 250.00 and 1,000.00. The coin of 0.01 is not in circulation any more though it is still used as a unit for prices. Cash transactions are always rounded to the nearest multiple of 0.05. Exchanging foreign currency can be done at banks, which are normally open from 09.00 to 16.00 on working days. There are numerous small exchange booths (with names like ``checkpoint") where you are offered a nice exchange rate, but commissions are rather high. \subsection*{Public Transport and the ``Strippenkaart"} The ticket for the use of all local public transportation is called ``Strippenkaart". The number of ``strips" required for a trip by public transportation depends on the distance to be travelled. The city of Amsterdam, and in fact all of the Netherlands, is divided into zones. If you travel through $n$ zones, you must validate $n$+1 strips. The validation must be made when you enter a bus or tram by having it stamped by the driver or by a machine. Within Amsterdam the strippenkaart can also be used in metro and railways. There are machines at all stations for validating the strippenkaart. A strippenkaart may be bought at railway stations, at post offices, on buses and trams from the driver, and at certain tobacco shops. When bought from a driver the price is higher than otherwise. \subsection*{Travel between VU Hospitium and Oudemanhuispoort} Because car traffic is not advised in the city center, the best connection between VU Hospitium and Oudemanhuispoort is by public transportation. There is a direct metro (partly subway), line 51, from stop ``Uilenstede" to Waterlooplein/City Hall (close to Oudemanhuispoort). The distance corresponds with 2 zones: 3 strips have to be validated. \subsection*{Safety Precautions} A few safety precautions may prevent unpleasant surprises. Keep close control of your wallet, briefcase and suitcase at all times. Don't leave valuables in a car parked on the streets of Amsterdam. In general the streets of Amsterdam are safe but it is advised to avoid the area between Damrak and Nieuwmarkt (the red light district). This area is definitely less safe than the rest of the inner city of Amsterdam. \subsection*{Parking} In general it's advisable to leave your car at your hotel and use public transportation facilities. Parking near the Oudemanhuispoort can best be done in the parkinggarage on Waterlooplein (costs about 35 NLG per day). \end{document} ------------------------------ End of MGNet Digest **************************
